A voice like fire, and a breathtaking presence on stage – Ekaterina Semenchuk fills every second of her performances in opera houses and concert halls with dramatic energy, creating stage characters made of flesh and blood that will be remembered. The mezzo-soprano's radiant voice is based on a solid foundation which, with is golden nuances, is typical for the Russian vocal school. Her top notes, however, are of radiant vigour, standing out effortlessly even amidst the largest orchestras. With these outstanding qualities, the Russian mezzo-soprano has established herself in the upper league for classical roles of Italian, French and Russian opera.
Born in Minsk, the singer studied in Saint Petersburg at the Rimsky-Korsakov Conservatory. She made her concert debut under the baton of Valery Gergiev at the early age of 24. She performs regularly at the Salzburg Festival, where she has appeared frequently alongside further stars of opera. After her engagements in Salzburg, she started her international career, taking her to the most important houses in Russia as well as to major opera houses abroad, such as the New York Metropolitan Opera, the Los Angeles Opera, the Opéra de Bastille in Paris, the Royal Opera House Covent Garden in London, the Berlin Staatsoper unter den Linden, the Palau de les Arts Reina Sofia in Valencia, the Arena di Verona, the Opera in Rome, the Scala in Milan, the Teatro San Carlo in Naples and the San Francisco Opera.
Semenchuk's repertoire includes mezzo parts from operas by composers such as Verdi (Il trovatore, Aida, Macbeth, Don Carlo, La forza del destino), Mascagni (Cavalleria rusticana), Ponchielli (La Gioconda) Cilea (Adriana Lecouvreur) Donizetti (Anna Bolena), Berlioz (Roméo et Juliette), Bizet (Carmen), Saint-Saëns (Samson et Dalila), Mussorgsky (Boris Godunov), Tchaikovsky (Pique Dame), Rimsky-Korsakov (The Legend of the Invisible City of Kitezh) and Prokofiev (War and Peace). She also sang Fricka in Wagner's “Die Walküre” (The Valkyrie). As a concert singer she devotes herself to works by Shostakovich, Mahler, Glinka and Dvořák.
